Victim of fatal car crash in Jamesville identified

Leon Williams, 16, of Syracuse, was reported missing two weeks prior to crash

— The victim of a fatal car crash that occurred Aug. 21 in Jamesville has been identified as Leon D. Williams, Jr., 16, of Syracuse.

Williams was driving east on East Seneca Turnpike when he left the roadway and crashed into a tree. He was driving a van that was stolen from Catholic Charities, 1654 W. Onondaga St. in Syracuse, during a burglary earlier in the night, DeWitt Police said at the time of the accident.

Jamesville firefighters responded to find the van fully engulfed in flames, and found Williams’ body inside after extinguishing the blaze. Williams could not be identified at the time due to the severity of the burns caused by the fire.

According to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office, the cause of death appeared to be blunt force trauma suffered in the accident.

Examiners identified Williams using his dental records, which were on file with a previous investigation. According to DeWitt Police, Williams was reported missing to the Syracuse Police Department on Aug. 6.

Examiners are waiting for final test results, at which time they will release an official autopsy report, DeWitt Police said.
