Manlius Police Department fields body-worn video cameras

— The Manlius Police Department has been conducting an active field study of officer-worn video camera systems since June and plans a permanent implementation by the end of the year. The camera systems are be worn by the officers in a manner that will provide a first-person perspective of what the officer’s encounter on a daily basis.

The use of body camera technology will enhance officer safety, reduce liability, assist prosecution and case resolution as well as further promote professionalism and accountability. Studies have shown that the use of body-worn cameras could bring measurable benefits to relations between police and civilians. The results in one case showed an 88 percent reduction in citizen complaints and a 60 percent reduction in uses of force after implementation of body worn video cameras.

The equipment chosen will be Taser’s Axon body camera. It is an ultra-durable on-officer camera designed to balance both simplicity and performance. Axon body provides agencies with a core uni-body design for easy deployment. A 130-degree wide-angle lens, multiple on-body mounting options and a full 12 hour shift buffer are included.
